Innovation and regeneration in agriculture for building climate resilient communities and sustainable livelihood in Bangladesh

Climatic events in Bangladesh bear a life-threatening spectrum, affecting multiple sectors including agriculture, food security, water resources, health and various other livelihood options. Climate change impacts, like recurring flood, cyclones, salinity intrusion, altered rainfall pattern and drought have negative impact on agriculture production in different dimensions and magnitude while at the same time increasing the vulnerability of different regions.

Different geographical regions experience a diverse range of climate change affects due to biophysical and demographic conditions. Located on the bank of the Bay of Bengal, the Southern part of Bangladesh is frequently exposed to cyclones, sea-level rise that over the years has increased salinity intrusion which has become a major concern lately. On the other hand, drought has become a major threat to the Northern part of Bangladesh, which is predominantly an area of water scarcity. Even though flood is not a new phenomenon, the intensity and frequency of floods has increased manifold in the central and North-Western region destroying agriculture production substantially every year.

 

This study features a contextual analysis of the situation that suggests that climate change will undermine the efforts to ensure the food security of the region unless urgent actions are taken. Thus immediate actions by employing innovative approaches on climate change adaptation and community resilience are of utmost importance that simultaneously ensures food security and livelihood stability.

The Unnayan Onneshan (UO), Gono Unnayan Kendra (GUK), Gono Kalyan Sangstha (GKS) and Shariatpur Development Society (SDS) along with the financial assistance from Oxfam Novib are implementing a programme titled ‘Regenerative Agriculture and Sustainable Livelihoods for Vulnerable Ecosystems (RESOLVE)’ with the goal of making communities more resilient to the adverse impacts of climate change as well as to ensure food security in three sub-districts: Gaibandha, Sirajgonj and Shariatpur. The paper is based upon the innovative and regenerative agricultural practices and feedback from the right holders of the programme by using a questionnaire survey in building the communities resilient from the adverse impacts of climate change and to ensure sustainable livelihood.
