Treatment and recycling of textile (paper) industrial wastewater in Faisalabad, Pakistan

Pakistan is facing energy crises from two decades and balanced availability of surface and underground water is also an associated problem. Textile and paper industries are flushing millions of gallons of effluents every day in the form of industrial wastewater containing many hazardous chemicals (organic and inorganic) which can cause environmental issues, damage underground water quality, aquatic life, agricultural land, and human health as well.

 

Information was collected for the period 2012-2014 from residents living near various industrial zones in and around Sargodha road in Faisalabad, Pakistan. Residents reported chemical impurities, bad quality underground water, decreased productivity of agricultural land and various health issues.

 

Recycling 25-50% of wastewater from the textile industry of Faisalabad region is proposed. In order to make the process economically feasible, the treatment cost should be partially covered by recovery of chemicals and by reduction in pumping cost. Recycled process is much more sustainable and environment friendly. Positive impact on climate change and reduced environmental impacts on surface and underground water will help uplift the economy of the Faisalabad region. A pilot project in coordination with the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposed for textile industry’s wastewater treatment.
