Pakistan
is the fourth largest cotton producer in the world, with production of 12.983
million bales during 2014. In last five years production of cotton has seen variations
with production below targets in 2012 and 2013. In the coming years, cotton
production may face decline due to abrupt climatic changes (including temperature
fluctuations and erratic rainfall).
The
present study was designed and conducted using primary and secondary data to
explore the impact of climate change on Pakistan’s cotton supply chain; and
forecasting the cotton sector future by 2025. 100 cotton growers from southern
Punjab were randomly selected and face-to-face interviews were conducted for
data collection.
Findings
revealed that majority respondents have below average knowledge about climate
change and only partial awareness of consequences like increased flower
shedding, reduced boll size and augmented insect/pest outbreaks. Most cotton
growers had not fully adopted measures like conservation of resources, cover
cropping, and intercropping for coping with climatic changes, especially given lack
of access to viable information. Forecasting of cotton production by 2025,
undertaken on the basis of secondary data, revealed greater production rate
than area of cotton cultivation and yield in Pakistan; and a negative
relationship between production and yield for this decade. Climate change appeared
as one of the anti-production reasons.
In order to sustain a
healthy cotton supply chain in Pakistan, adapting to climate change is
inevitable. Advancement of temperature,
drought and humidity resistant varieties, early warning system, and climate
forecast information dissemination could help farmers to stabilise the cotton
supply chain.
