Blue Economy of Pakistan: An Appraisal
Muhammad Abbas Hassan*
The oceans play a major role in international trade and global economy. The lack of maritime trade and under utilisation of ports by Pakistan has resulted in a strong decline of blue economy. This maritime blindness is a result of multiple factors and lack of awareness among the masses. For a country like Pakistan, blessed with 700 km of coastal line and a geostrategic location that allows access to one of the most busy sea lines of communications, ignoring the development of a blue economy is problematic. Due to governmental negligence, the country has not cashed in on global connectivity, and also failed to establish itself as an international hub of transshipment and maritime activities. This paper dwells in detail about the opportunities and challenges in the development of a blue economy in Pakistan. The paper will also include policy recommendations for capitalising on the opportunities and how the current barriers can be removed in this regard.
