China’s Belt and Road Initiative: Exploring Potential Gains and Losses
Caroline Freund*
China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an ambitious effort to improve connectivity between China and more than 65 countries through infrastructure investment and regional cooperation. The initiative has the potential to significantly accelerate the rate of economic integration and development in the region, as trade costs decline. But, like any large undertaking, there are significant policy and economic challenges. The presentation will analyse ongoing work at the World Bank aimed at analysing the potential gains from better connectivity in terms of trade, foreign investment, and regional development. It will also seek to identify potential risks of the initiative and policies and institutions that participating countries can implement to manage them.
