Dr. Mehtab Karim
is the founding Vice Chancellor of Malir University of Science & Technology
where he is also Executive Director of Centre for Studies in Population &
Health. During 2010-16 he was a Research
Professor in the School of Public Policy at George Mason University in USA and
earlier was a Professor and Head of Population & Reproductive Health
Program at the Aga Khan University in Karachi.
His other appointments include; Senior Research Fellow at Princeton
University, USA; Senior Associate in the Department of Population Dynamics,
Johns Hopkins University, USA and Research Fellow at London School of
Economics, UK and East-West Center in Hawaii.
During 1991-93 on
behalf of the World Bank he was Technical Advisor to the Planning Department of
Government of Sindh where he advised on the implementation of Social Action
Program and restructuring of Health Services. At present, he is UNFPA lead
consultant to the Planning & Development Board and Population Welfare
Department of Government of Sindh to develop strategies for the implementation
of population policy in Sindh.
During 2011-14,
he was a member of the governing council of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics during
2016-17 served as a member of a committee to oversee the 2017 census in
Pakistan.
Prof. Karim obtained MS from University of
Chicago, and PhD in Demography from Cornell University. He has conducted extensive research on population
and health issues in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh and on Demography of Muslim-majority
countries. He has authored more than 60
research articles and has co-authored three books.
