Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani

Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani was sworn in as the 33rd Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on 17 August 2023 in the Caretaker Cabinet.

With a diplomatic career spanning 38 years, Ambassador Jilani has extensive bilateral and multilateral experience. He has served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Belgium, Luxemburg, and the European Union, as well as High Commissioner to Australia. He was the Spokesperson in the Foreign Office from 2005 to 2006 and was appointed as the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan in 2012, holding this top civil service position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 2013.

A specialist in South Asian affairs, Ambassador Jilani has held positions such as Director General for South Asia and SAARC in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Acting High Commissioner to India. From 2019 to 2022, he was a member of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs. 

Additionally, Ambassador Jilani is associated with prominent think tanks including the Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies (CASS) and the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS). He holds an MSc in Defence and Strategic Studies and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree.
